The open-source platform developed by the ALiVE initiative plays a crucial role in addressing the need for accessible and contextually relevant tools to assess life skills and values among youth and children in East Africa. By providing these resources free of charge, the platform fosters collaboration among various stakeholders, including governments, civil society organizations, and researchers. This collaborative approach ensures that the assessment tools are not only tailored to the unique needs of different communities but also remain dynamic and continuously improved through shared experiences and feedback.

The platform aspires to be a comprehensive repository and item bank for evaluating a broad spectrum of life skills and values pertinent to the East African context. Ultimately, the platform aims to produce robust evidence that informs education policies and practices, ensuring that young people in East Africa and beyond are equipped with essential life skills.

In a rapidly changing world, understanding and nurturing life skills among adolescents and children is essential for their personal and social development. The open-source platform not only democratizes access to vital assessment tools but also promotes capacity building within local communities, empowering them to evaluate and enhance their educational strategies. By enabling stakeholders to share knowledge and best practices openly, this initiative contributes to a collective effort to cultivate resilient, informed, and skilled young individuals who can navigate future challenges effectively.

To enhance local expertise and increase access to contextualized assessments of life skills and values, ALiVE has created an open-source platform with tools for children (6-12 years) and adolescents (13-17 years).

This platform is for use by government, CSOs, researchers, and others to assess children or learn about assessing life skills and values. The goal is to produce evidence to inform policies and practices in education systems in East Africa and beyond.

We invite education practitioners from government, civil society, academia, and development partners to use the ALiVE tools to contribute to the evidence base on life skills and values in children and adolescents both regionally and globally.
